Nike Alphafly 3 Review

White and orange Nike running shoe on white background

The Alphafly series have consisted of nothing but superb top-tier racing shoes. This version has fixed all the critics of previous models and provides a lightweight, firm and stable ride. In this Nike Alphafly 3 review I will go over all the pros and cons of this shoe along with my overall thoughts and feelings after using this shoe for several months.

A good level of cushioning is an essential component of a great shoe. A cushioned midsole helps relieve stress from the joints and provides support that makes long distance runs much easier.

Good support is essential for all runners, so it is very important that when buying trainers an individual buys running shoes that have enough support. That may look different for all runners but it is important to consider.

It is important that a supportive running shoe provides a stable platform and reduces the risk of potential injuries.

I believe that it is important to buy shoes that have been built to last. If you are going to spend your own money on shoes then they should stay in good working condition for many months to come.

Making sure your shoes fit properly is very important as if a shoe is too big it can cause the shoes to start to rub against you feet causing blisters and other discomforts. By not having a shoe that fits it will also get rid of the possibility of a comfortable run.

Breathable materials in the upper part of the shoe helps keep the feet cool and dry during runs. This is because it helps prevent the build up of sweat and moisture in the shoe which reduces discomfort and irritation when running.

A breathable upper shoe enhances comfort and can be a life saver when running in hot days as it helps prevent overheating. This makes shoes with this feature an excellent choice as well as a comfortable fit.

Running shoes can get really expensive and if you are someone that runs a lot you will have to keep coming back to buy more. This can really add up which is why I have added cost to the list of important factor.

Energy Return

There is no better feeling than being propelled by a responsive running shoe. A running shoe should that gives energy back to the runner can make all types of runs feel so much nicer. This category is even more important in race day shoes.

Nike Alphafly 3 First Impressions

I decided to purchase this version half a size up because the AlphaFly 2 did feel very snug, especially if I wore thick socks. My first run was a 20km fast paced run and I found the sizing to be perfect. The shoe really felt like a glove on my foot.

The cushioning felt a lot firmer and aggressive which meant it was very easy to pick up the pace. I enjoyed the smoother transitions as this was an issue I had with the previous model. The transitions in this shoe felt a lot more natural than previous AlphaFlys and it was easier to get into a rhythm.

The loud foot strikes were still there and I didn’t have to ask anyone in front of me to move over to the side as they would hear me from a mile away.

I was very impressed with how comfortable these shoes felt. I really felt like I could wear them all day and still feel fresh which is very rare in a super-shoe. They were also very light but that wasn’t a surprise.

Why Should You Buy These Shoes?

If you are in the market for a comfortable and firm racing shoe then this is the perfect model for you. If you find the VaporFly 3 too soft or flat then this an excellent alternative for you. This shoe is a lightweight racer that disappears on your feet.

Why Should You Not Buy These Shoes

If you are looking for a plush racer with a squishy ride, you should skip the AlphaFly 3. Equally if you are wanting a super shoe with an extreme rocker that will throw you forward then I would recommend having a look at the Metaspeed Sky +. On top of that you can get a cheaper super shoe.

Upper of the shoe

The upper is made up of the AtomKnit 3.0 which is a great improvement over the previous version and addresses the heel lockdown problem. The padding on the inside of the heel counter is much more prominent and the foot lockdown is now very good.

When it comes to sizing I ordered a half size up and it fit me perfectly. Runners who do not like an overly tight fit should order a half size up as it does fit very snug and narrow which can be an issue for wide feet runners.

The breathability is also fantastic even when wearing very thick socks and there are notched laces which will never come undone.

Foam of the shoe

When it comes to cushioning this model has one of the firmest rides of this year’s super shoe releases. If you enjoy plush rides then this is definitely a shoe to avoid. I had initially put firm ride as a con for this model however I think that the firm ride makes it feel very aggressive and fast.

In previous models a large portion of the carbon fibre plate was exposed under the midfoot however in this model there is just a continuous bottom with more foam surrounding the plate which increases how snappy the shoe feels.

Sole of the shoe

The AlphaFly doesn’t feel particularly amazing in any one department. It doesn’t feel wildly bouncy, it doesn’t have an extreme rocker and it doesn’t have a featherweight build. What it does provide is a deeply cushioned, stable ride which is smooth and punchy. It is a great all around shoe that can be used for many different activities as well as racing.

This can also be said for the Vaporfly 3 however the main difference is in the air pods in the forefoot area which makes it firmer and more responsive. When you pick up the pace, the air pods activate by adding extra thrust to the ride which isn’t there in the Vaporfly or any other super shoe.

There is also a lot of rubber on the outsole which makes landings feel softer, increases durability and also allows for excellent traction when running.

Conclusion to this Nike AlphaFly 3 Review

Overall, this is an amazing shoe and I would highly recommend it as a racing shoe. This model is more versatile than any other racing shoe and can be used for other types of running apart from slow tempo or recovery runs. If your only target with buying these shoes is to run as fast as possible during a race event then there are other models that will do this job better such as Vaporfly 3 or the Asics Metaspeed Sky +.
