Asics Metaspeed Edge+ Review

The Asics Metaspeed Edge+ is a feather weight racing shoe that offers excellent ground feel and smooth transitions. It is best suited for distances up to a half marathon. I have really enjoyed putting this shoe to the test over the past few months and I think it might just be one of the best tempo options out there.

In this Asics Metaspeed Edge+ Review I will be taking you through every detail of this amazing shoe.

A good level of cushioning is an essential component of a great shoe. A cushioned midsole helps relieve stress from the joints and provides support that makes long distance runs much easier.

Good support is essential for all runners, so it is very important that when buying trainers an individual buys running shoes that have enough support. That may look different for all runners but it is important to consider.

It is important that a supportive running shoe provides a stable platform and reduces the risk of potential injuries.

I believe that it is important to buy shoes that have been built to last. If you are going to spend your own money on shoes then they should stay in good working condition for many months to come.

Making sure your shoes fit properly is very important as if a shoe is too big it can cause the shoes to start to rub against you feet causing blisters and other discomforts. By not having a shoe that fits it will also get rid of the possibility of a comfortable run.

Breathable materials in the upper part of the shoe helps keep the feet cool and dry during runs. This is because it helps prevent the build up of sweat and moisture in the shoe which reduces discomfort and irritation when running.

A breathable upper shoe enhances comfort and can be a life saver when running in hot days as it helps prevent overheating. This makes shoes with this feature an excellent choice as well as a comfortable fit.

Running shoes can get really expensive and if you are someone that runs a lot you will have to keep coming back to buy more. This can really add up which is why I have added cost to the list of important factor.

Energy Return

There is no better feeling than being propelled by a responsive running shoe. A running shoe should that gives energy back to the runner can make all types of runs feel so much nicer. This catagory is even more important in race day shoes.

Asics Metaspeed Edge+ First Impressions

My first thoughts when seeing this shoe was that it looked identical to the sky which is not a bad thing as this was a very aesthetically pleasing shoe. However this did remove some of the excitement around the new release. This is because who wants to buy a new shoe that looks identical to the old one?

The first time putting these shoes on I was very impressed at how light they felt. They felt just as light as vapour fly’s which are some of the lightest running shoes on the market. One thing I would say is that the toe box was very small so I would recommend going half a size up to ensure your toes have enough space.

My first run was a fast pace 10km and this shoe did not disappoint. It propelled me along at a much faster pace than I would of been able to run if wearing a different pair of shoes. The midsole of this shoe was much firmer than in the Sky.

Why Should You Buy The Shoe

If you are in the market for a lightweight super shoe then this is an excellent choice. The Asics Metaspeed Edge+ is one of the lightest super shoes on the market and offers excellent speed assistance, so if you are interested in a shoe that will maximise your speed and there are no better options out there.

Why Should You Not Buy The Shoe

If you are looking for a marathon shoe then this model will disappoint as this model is best suited to half marathon distances or less. If you are in need of a shoe that offers high levels of support then this is not the model for you as this shoe prioritises lightweight and speed.

Upper Of the shoe

Asic’s uppers are know for being flawless however the upper of the Metaspeed Edge+ is a little rough around the edges. While the engineered mesh is very breathable it is also made up of a hard and scratchy material which is not very comfortable.

This is a shoe that you shouldn’t wear with expensive socks as the upper pulls on the fibres and leaves bite marks all over them. Another issue I had was with the laces. They felt cheap and started to fray after only a few runs which was disappointing especially given the shoes price point.

The benefit of having limited padding is that when it rains the upper does not hold water which means it remains unaffected by weather conditions. This is important as some shoes in the rain hold lots of water and then become heavy and unresponsiveness.

Foam of the shoe

This shoe has a full length carbon plate which is very rigid and not very flexible. The insole is very thin which means there is very little cushioning however it offers excellent speed assistance. This is why this model is not meant for longer distances than half marathon.

Due to the thinner midsole the plate doesn’t have a deep slope like the Sky’s plate which means you don’t feel the curve underneath your foot as much.

Sole Of shoe

The outsole of this model is made from ASICSGRIP which is a soft and light rubber material. This rubber helps the shoe offer excellent traction in both wet and dry conditions. This material is lighter than normal Asics rubber which helps maximise speed however the downside to this is that the outsole is less tolerant to abrasion.

The outsole is very durable and shows little signs of wear and tear after long runs, so if you are looking for a supershoe with more durability than the rest I would highly recommend this model.

Conclusion to this Asics Metaspeed Edge+ Review

Overall, I would highly recommend this model for runners who prioritise speed or are buying shoes for races. This shoe although not the most comfortable it will help you run at your fastest and reach new PBs. If you are looking for a highly cushioned shoe or a shoe that offers lots of support then this is trainer will disappoint.
